Amid skyrocketing unemployment, here's a figure that might catch your attention: nearly one million workers age 55 and older have landed new jobs over the last 12 months, making it one of the only age groups that is actually experiencing employment gains.
So reports John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a leading outplacement consulting firm and a leading expert on employment issues. With increased demand comes increased opportunity, including encore careers and entrepreneurship.
However, he notes, there are still obstacles to finding work, including dismantling myths about older age and abilities. He recommends that older workers: be accommodating; provide past examples of loyalty; emphasize relevant experience; demonstrate flexibility and creativity; look and act young; and stay current and embrace technology.
And, equally important, here's what not to do: apologize or act defensive; don't lead with your resume; don't say that you took early retirement; do not mention accomplishments more than a decade old; and don't talk down to or patronize a younger manager.
